In brief: Mexico reports job losses in July

* A new report released by Mexico’s national social security institute (IMSS) has revealed that 2,168 jobs were lost in the formal sector in the month of July, ending a consistent positive trend in monthly job creation. The report states that, as of 31 July, 21.9m jobs were registered with the IMSS, and that the net number of jobs created and registered in 2023 was 512,243. This reflects an increase of 56,856 posts on the average number of jobs created over any comparable period of the last 10 years which is reported as 455,387. Furthermore, despite the loss of jobs in July, 805,705 new jobs were registered in the last 12 months with the IMSS, which is the third largest increase over a comparable period since records began. The sectors which have registered the greatest yearly percentage increase are construction (10.0%), transportation & communications (5.4%), and commerce (4.5%), and the states which have reported an annual increase of over 8% on last year are Baja California Sur, Quintana Roo, and Tabasco.
