In brief: Aviation sector rebounding in Venezuela

* The Venezuelan anti-sanctions lobby group Observatorio Venezolano Antibloqueo has highlighted figures from the regional aviation group Asociación Latinoamericana y del Caribe de Transporte Aéreo (Alta), which show strong growth in Venezuela’s aviation market compared with pre-coronavirus (Covid-19) levels. The figures show that domestic flights were up by 58% in May compared with May 2019, with over 2,400 flights recorded in May 2023. These figures come as major international airlines are resuming suspended operations in Venezuela; Chile’s LATAM airline resumed flights from Caracas after a seven-year hiatus on 1 August with the inauguration of a Peru-Venezuela route, while Colombia’s Wingo and Trinidad and Tobago’s Caribbean Airlines have also recently resumed flights to Venezuela.
