Key figure in Mexico’s ‘self-defence’ movement murdered

The brother of Hipólito Mora, the former leader of Mexico’s ‘self-defence’ movement who was killed in Michoacán state on 29 June, has sworn that he and other citizens will once again take up arms if justice is not served to his brother’s killers. Mora’s killing has shone a light on the lack of progress that has been made in tackling violent crime, particularly in Mexico’s drug trafficking hotspots, and the failure of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to live up to key campaign promises to combat the control of criminal groups.
