* Paraguay’s president-elect, Santiago Peña, has stated he will focus on developing sources of renewable energy generation after taking office on 15 August. Speaking at the Fundação Getulio Vargas university and think tank in São Paulo, Brazil, Peña said he was “determined to move forward” with the construction of new hydroelectric dams and the development of solar energy, primarily in the country’s Chaco region. Peña stated that the idea would not only be to sell the energy, but also to use it as a way to generate jobs in Paraguay. Peña is currently on a four-day visit to Brazil, his second trip to the country since winning Paraguay’s presidential elections on 30 April.
