BRAZIL: Bolsonarista hostility against judiciary

At an international airport in Rome on 14 July, Alexandre de Moraes, a supreme court (STF) justice and president of Brazil’s top electoral court (TSE), was harassed and verbally abused by right-wing Brazilian nationals. The judge has long been the object of far-right outrage, having led multiple judicial actions against supporters and allies of the right-wing former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023). Brazil’s judicial institutions have sought to investigate and punish attacks from the far-right attempting to undermine democratic processes – a clampdown which Bolsonaro supporters have criticised as persecution.
