*Cuba’s deputy economy & planning minister
Leticia Morales González has said that Cuba’s GDP growth in 2022 was 1.8%, less than the 4% forecast. Morales said that the activities which posted the highest growth were hospitality, transport, communications, education, and culture & sport, while the highest falls were in agriculture, livestock and forestry, as well as manufacturing industry, trade and electricity. She said that GDP levels were still around 8% below those registered in 2019, the year before the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic struck. She also warned that this year Cuba’s exports were just US$1.28bn, just 35.7% of the amount forecast for the period in the government’s annual plan. As regards tourism, she said that 1.3m tourists had visited Cuba this year, 80% of the amount forecast in the plan and just 51.1% of the amount registered in a comparable period in 2019.
