In brief: Brazil’s Vale sees rise in iron ore production

* The Brazilian mining giant Vale has reported its production figures for the second quarter of 2023, which showed a volume of 78.74m tonnes (t) of iron ore produced, a record figure for Q2. This marks an increase from the 66.77mt produced in Q1 2023 and the 74.11mt registered in Q2 last year. In its quarterly report, Vale partly attributed the positive figures to the “solid performance” from the mining complexes of Itabira and Vargem Grande, both in the south-eastern state of Minas Gerais. Other products which saw quarterly rises were iron ore pellets (9.1mt, up from 8.3mt) and copper (78,800t, up from 67,000t). However, nickel production in Q2 2023 (36,900t) was down from the 41,000t registered in Q1.
