MEXICO: Trouble in Guerrero

Violence has flared in Chilpancingo, the capital of the Mexican state of Guerrero following the arrest of two alleged members of local criminal organisation Los Ardillos. Thousands protested on 10 July to demand the release of the pair, blocking the Autopista del Sol which links the resort town of Acapulco in Guerrero with Mexico City (CDMX), and taking 13 public officials hostage. The incident has raised concerns over the authorities’ ability to contain criminal groups in the region and potential links between local government and organised crime.
