Correísta candidate set fair for run-off in Ecuador

Luisa González, the presidential candidate for Ecuador’s left-wing Revolución Ciudadana (RC), the party of former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017), has a big lead in the polls ahead of the snap presidential election on 20 August. It might not be enough for González to win outright in the first round, but it should see her comfortably progress to a second round. Correísmo has been here before. Its candidate in the 2021 elections, Andrés Arauz, now González’s running mate, won the first round at a canter only to lose the run-off against Guillermo Lasso, who marshalled the anti-Correísta vote, although this is unlikely to be as strong this time around, particularly given the reasons behind Lasso’s truncated term in office.
