HAITI: Guterres pays first visit

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres has paid his first official visit in the job to Haiti, which remains in the throes of a multifaceted security and political crisis, two years on from the assassination of president Jovenel Moïse (2017-2021). During his visit, Guterres, who in April compared insecurity in Haiti with that of countries in armed conflict, reiterated the need for a foreign security deployment – a call he first made in October 2022 and has since repeated on various occasions, but which has so far fallen on deaf ears. His visit follows various recent international summits on Haiti, which have failed to produce any breakthrough, either regarding an end to the violence, as gangs continue to exploit the power vacuum left by Moïse’s murder, or the collapse of the state, with no elections held since 2016 and no publicly elected officials serving since January.
