Brazil prepares for post-Bolsonaro era

Brazil’s top electoral court (TSE) voted on 30 June to bar the right-wing former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) from running in elections for the next eight years, extinguishing any hopes he may have had for a political comeback in the 2026 presidential race. Since this seismic political development, pundits have been speculating on who might succeed Bolsonaro as a torchbearer for the country’s conservatives. Bolsonaro’s downfall spells uncertainty for the future of ‘Bolsonarismo’ and may offer a chance for more moderate right-of-centre candidates to build their voter base.
