REGION: The US moves to counter China’s encroachments

The 8 June 2023 meeting in The Bahamas between US Vice President Kamala Harris and Caribbean leaders has been presented by the US administration led by President Joe Biden as further proof of Washington’s re-engagement with the Caribbean after the doldrum years of the former administration led by Donald Trump (2017-2021). The Bahamas gathering followed on from Harris’s earlier meetings with Caribbean leaders in April, June, and September 2022. The Biden administration’s efforts to be seen to care about the Caribbean appear in large measure to be driven by fears over the encroachment of China in the region.
