BRAZIL: Regulating Brazil’s online information ecosystem

Brazil’s ‘tech lash’ has gained steam under the administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, whose government has been pushing for legislation to clamp down on tech companies to monitor their platforms for misinformation and other forms of toxic online discourse. Even Brazil’s judiciary has supported these efforts, as the supreme court (STF) ordered an investigation on 12 May into the tech companies Google and Telegram, which, along with right-wing members of congress, have campaigned against the government’s proposed online regulation bill.
