Argentine elections roiled by femicide and violent protests

Argentines were gripped this week by the electoral repercussions of what appears to have been a femicide carried out by one of the closest allies of the governor of the northern province of Chaco, Jorge Capitanich, a poster boy for Kirchnerismo, and the eruption of violence in the north-western province of Jujuy over a controversial constitutional reform. No sooner had the right-of-centre opposition Juntos por el Cambio (JxC) coalition celebrated victory in the Chaco primary elections on 18 June than it suffered a setback as a result of fierce clashes in Jujuy between police and mainly indigenous protesters up in arms against reforms pushed through by the JxC’s most prominent governor, Gerardo Morales.
