CHILE: Boric launches peace commission for Mapuche conflict

Chile’s President Gabriel Boric led the launch of a new presidential commission for peace and understanding on 21 June, the national day of indigenous peoples, to help try and resolve the intractable Mapuche conflict in the south of the country. The new body will evaluate Mapuche claims to ancestral land and engage in extensive dialogue with local communities and local government. The commission is also being tasked with finding a way to balance demands for land restoration or reparation with the concept of affordability for the Chilean state.
