ARGENTINA |
Strong tourism numbers. Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) released on 7 June new tourism data, which shows that the number of foreign visitors to the country nearly doubled year-on-year in April. Argentina received 1.1m foreign visitors that month, a 98.9% increase on the same month a year earlier. Of these, 574,800 were tourists and 526,400 were excursionists (international visitors who do not stay the night). The number of foreign tourists to visit Argentina in the first four months of 2023 grew 209.6% compared with January-April 2022, to 4.34m. Visitors from Uruguay (25.9%), Chile (21.9%) and Brazil (14.9%) made up the majority of overnight tourists in April. This shows a continuing recovery of the tourism industry following the impacts of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic – with a weak currency also making Argentina an attractive destination for neighbouring countries – although tourism numbers remain below pre-pandemic levels.
