In brief: Monthly slump in Brazil’s services sector in April

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures on the services sectors, which showed that the volume of services in April contracted by 1.6% compared with the previous month. In year-on-year terms, the sector grew by 2.7%. The monthly drop in activity comes after two consecutive months of growth for the sector, which saw growth of 1.4% in March and 0.8% in February. Four of the five service categories measured saw a decrease, with the transport category the main driver of the monthly drop (-4.4%). Ibge research coordinator Rodrigo Lobo highlighted that several sub-categories within the transport category, such as ports and terminals and air travel, had seen less activity, which affects other services beyond the transport category.
