Chile’s far-right ascendant

Chile’s far-right opposition Partido Republicano (PR) is flexing its muscles. Fresh from returning more delegates to the constitutional council than any other party in last month’s elections, the PR this week assumed the presidency of the body and shared control over its four commissions with the right-of-centre opposition coalition Chile Vamos. The PR congressional bloc then delivered an ultimatum to the leftist government led by President Gabriel Boric to replace its deputy health minister, who it accused of mishandling a public health crisis, or it would table a motion of censure against the health minister. The government initially resisted, but backed down when the PR began to move ahead with its threat.
