HONDURAS: Castro moves on key promise

Honduran President Xiomara Castro and her leftist Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) government have unveiled a new committee on agrarian security and access to land. This is in line with Castro’s 2021 manifesto which pledges to promote a comprehensive agrarian reform to address issues like inequitable access to land, insecure land tenure, and the overlap of private and ancestral land titles – a major cause of Honduras’s deep-rooted inequality, poverty, and violence. Civil-society groups have already raised doubts, however, regarding the committee’s composition, as well as complaints regarding the government’s failure to address other related demands. Amid continued reports of deadly violence targeting land rights defenders, this all indicates major challenges ahead for the Castro administration in making good on its promises.
