VENEZUELA: Deepening ties with Iran

Iran has played a vital role in helping President Nicolás Maduro’s government to mitigate the impact of US sanctions on the Venezuelan oil sector. As such, it came as no surprise that strengthening oil cooperation dominated discussions when Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi travelled to Caracas for talks with Maduro on 12 June, but the two leaders also reached agreements on a range of other economic matters.
