Ecuador prepares to stage early elections

Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso delivered his second annual state-of-the-nation address on 24 May, which marked what should have been the halfway point of his four-year term in office. It is unlikely that he will deliver a third. Lasso used his address to justify his decision a week earlier to invoke the ‘muerte cruzada’ article in the constitution to dissolve the national assembly to avert impeachment, and stage new elections. The national electoral council (CNE) has formally convened presidential and congressional elections for 20 August. Several presidential aspirants have emerged.
