COLOMBIA: Petro puts supporters on standby to pressure congress

Following the collapse of two pillars of his legislative alliance last week, Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has turned to his left-wing base to pressure congress to approve his reform agenda. Addressing a crowd from a balcony of the presidential palace Casa de Nariño on 1 May, Petro told his supporters to prepare to mobilise in support of his government’s reforms. The speech will only worsen executive-legislative tensions which are already under significant strain after a cabinet reshuffle that saw the centre-right Partido Conservador (PC) and the centrist Partido de la U (PU) stripped of their ministerial representation [WR-23-17], since when the PC has confirmed its withdrawal from the ruling alliance.
