COSTA RICA: Chaves moves on insecurity
In response to record homicides last year, and amid little sign of this violence abating, Costa Rica’s President Rodrigo Chaves has unveiled a new security plan ‘Operación Costa Rica Segura’ (Operation Safe Costa Rica). Costa Rica, which abolished its army in 1949, has long held a position as being one of the safest countries in Central America. However, the rise in violence, which has largely been attributed to the growing presence of transnational drug trafficking organisations (DTOs) in the country, highlights a significant challenge for the right-of-centre Chaves government which is due to mark its first year in office next month.
