* During a visit to Portugal by Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, he and Portugal’s Prime Minister António Costa have issued a joint statement in which they promised increased trade, investment, and cooperation across a range of sectors, such as aviation and defence. This included a partnership between the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer and the Portuguese company OGMA to produce the A-29 Super Tucano attack aircraft with a configuration meeting the requirements of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). This latest version of Embraer’s Super Tucano light aircraft, suitable for both combat and reconnaissance missions, will be used mainly by European nations. The Brazilian manufacturer had announced that several European countries had expressed interest in the A-29 model and that 15 militaries around the world have already placed orders, including the US Air Force. Brazilian-Portuguese aerospace defence cooperation also includes a deal, worth around €872m (US$957.58m), to deliver five of Embraer’s KC-390 military cargo aircraft to the Portuguese Air Force. Through OGMA, Embraer aircraft are being manufactured in two factories in Portugal.
