MEXICO: Electoral tribunal in the crosshairs

Once again, an electoral reform initiative has stoked tensions in Mexico. The latest proposal, which is currently being discussed by a congressional committee, looks to limit the scope of the federal electoral tribunal (TEPJF). This distinguishes it from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s ‘Plan B’ electoral reform, passed in December [WR-23-04], which largely concerned the national electoral institute (INE). Another notable change is that the ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party appears to have the support of the three main opposition parties for this initiative, meaning it may well obtain the votes needed to pass it as a constitutional reform.
