PERU: Ex-president Toledo battles extradition from US

Peru’s former president Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006) has been granted a last-minute stay of extradition from the US to Peru, where he is wanted on bribery charges. On 6 April an appeals court in the US state of California issued a 14-day reprieve to Toledo, who had previously been ordered to surrender to the authorities so that he could be extradited. Toledo is accused of receiving approximately US$35m in bribes from the Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht, which in 2014 was found to have been operating a massive corruption network in at least ten Latin American and Caribbean countries.
