Colombia: Petro’s fast track transition hits obstacles

Comparatively speaking Colombia stands out because it is both highly dependent on fossil fuels while simultaneously trying to fast-track its version of a fair energy transition. In 2022 left-wing politician and former guerrilla Gustavo Petro campaigned insistently for policies designed to radically decarbonise the economy. He took office in August of that year. In his first six months in office (running to February 2023) he began to map out policies for the transition, attracting some domestic criticism from those who believe he is trying to move too far too quickly.
