Mexico: Is AMLO going green?

Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) took office as Mexico’s new left wing and nationalist president in December 2018. During the first four of his six-year term in office he came across as an unreconstructed enthusiast for state-owned, fossil fuel-burning energy companies, such as Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex – oil and gas) and Comisión Federal de Eletricidad (CFE – electric power generation and distribution). Mexico, the second most populous country in Latin America, appeared not to be interested in any major energy transition.
