HAITI: An overview of the country’s main gangs

A major factor in Haiti’s current multifaceted crisis is the role of the country’s gangs which have exploited the power vacuum left by the July 2021 murder of former president Jovenel Moïse (2017-2021). Such is the gravity of the situation that in October 2022 the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) approved a resolution authorising a sanctions package for Haiti to address gang violence. With the UN humanitarian coordinator in Haiti warning on 8 December that gangs were controlling 60% of the capital, Port-au-Prince, we consider an October 2022 report by Geneva-headquartered NGO Global Initiative against Transnational Crime (GITC) which looks at the main gangs currently dominating the country.
