* Brazil’s environment minister, Marina Silva and Germany’s minister for economic cooperation and development, Svenja Schulze, have announced that Germany will provide Brazil with a €203m (US$220m) package for socio-environmental projects. According to a statement from Brazil’s environment ministry, €35m will go to the Amazon Fund for rainforest conservation; €31m will be used to help Amazonian state governments with projects for the protection and sustainable use of the forest; €29.5m will go towards a fund to improve energy efficiency for small and medium-sized businesses; €80m will go on loans to help farmers reforest their land; €13.1m towards reforesting degraded areas, including by providing support to small-scale farmers; €9m to help build sustainable supply chains; and €5.37m on renewable energy sources for the transport sector. The announcement came as Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz was in Brasília as part of a South American tour, where he and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva yesterday “underlined their intention to speed up the conclusion of a balanced agreement between Mercosur [the Southern Common Market] and the European Union,” according to a joint statement.
