* Uruguay’s livestock, agriculture, and fishing minister Fernando Mattos has met with defence minister, Javier García, to discuss joint actions regarding the prolonged drought and the agricultural emergency affecting the country. Both ministries agreed to form a team to provide help to farmers and producers, with the defence ministry also agreeing to provide machinery for cleaning out dams and watering holes. Mattos thanked the armed forces for its contribution and stressed that the government was working to ensure that “no farmer has to relocate due to lack of support”. This comes after the ministry of livestock, agriculture, and fisheries (MGAP) announced that a nationwide agricultural emergency would remain in place until 24 April due to prolonged drought. On 25 January, the MGAP and other State organisms approved a list of 13 measures to help alleviate the situation and offer support to producers. These included subsidised loans; establishing rural development roundtables to respond to the needs of local producers; allocating funds to municipalities; creating specific credit lines; extending deadlines on the repayment of loans and other payments; subsidising electricity costs; and providing drinking water to rural areas.
