* Juan de Tomás, the director of Peru’s regulator for energy and mining investment (Osinergmin), has told local radio station RPP Notícias that fuel shortages are worsening around the country due to widespread protests against President Dina Boluarte’s government. De Tomás said that the shortages are most severe in the Amazonian region of Madre de Dios, where there is no supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). He said that the southern region of Ica was experiencing serious shortages of diesel and gasohol, while shortages are also rapidly worsening in the nearby regions of Arequipa and Puno due to roadblocks on the Pan-American highway. Pucallpa, the capital of the eastern region of Ucayali, is also “in a critical situation”, according to De Tomás. Under relentless pressure from the protests, Boluarte yesterday indicated that she is willing to bring general elections forward to satisfy protesters’ central demand. Addressing the permanent council of the Organization of American States (OAS), Boluarte said that she has asked congress to vote as soon as possible to approve the moving forwards of elections, which she described as the “way out of the crisis”.
