BRAZIL: A major crackdown on anti-democratic rioters

A week after supporters of former right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro (Partido Liberal, PL) stormed and vandalised Brazil’s congress, presidential palace, and supreme court (STF) headquarters in Brasília, the country’s authorities are now involved in a massive crackdown on those who executed, financed, instigated, or supported the rampage. The outbreak of violence on 8 January was considered the most significant attack on Brazil’s democratic institutions since the demise of the military regime, in the mid 1980s. Now, the police, public prosecutors, courts, congress leaders and the government of leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Partido dos Trabalhadores, PT), seem to be joining efforts not only to rapidly identify and punish those involved in the assault, but also to ensure that they pay for the damage.
