CHILE: No smooth flight for Boric

After a tough first month in power last April Chile’s President Gabriel Boric said his government had “hit turbulence”. It is fair to say the pilot is still yet to turn off the fasten seatbelt sign. Some members of the political opposition this week openly mooted filing an impeachment motion against Boric over his issuance of 13 presidential pardons at the end of 2022. At the very least the opposition is intent on censuring the justice minister, Marcela Ríos, over the matter, even though she has already been removed from her post. There have been periods of calm air between Boric’s encounters with turbulence, however, and just this week he received a boost as congress approved a constitutional reform paving the way for a new constitution to be drafted, and, at the third time of asking, designated a new attorney general.
