COLOMBIA: ELN talks in jeopardy

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro enjoyed an extended political honeymoon for his first five months in office, buoyed by optimism about his plans for ‘total peace’. Now, however, the cracks are beginning to show. Following the humiliation of his premature announcement of a bilateral ceasefire with the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN), which was swiftly denied by the guerrilla group [WR-23-01], the ELN warned on 9 January that Petro’s presumption had left peace talks “in crisis”. As if to underline the fact that ‘total peace’ remains a distant prospect, Vice President Francia Márquez announced the following day that her bodyguards had thwarted an assassination attempt against her in her native department of Cauca in south-western Colombia.
