Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro enjoyed an extended political honeymoon for his first five months in office, buoyed by optimism about his plans for ‘total peace’. Now, however, the cracks are beginning to show. Following the humiliation of his premature announcement of a bilateral ceasefire with the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN), which was swiftly denied by the guerrilla group [WR-23-01], the ELN warned on 9 January that Petro’s presumption had left peace talks “in crisis”.
