On 18 and 19 December Buenos Aires experienced the biggest public demonstration ever seen in its history, with over 1m people celebrating the Argentine national team’s victory in the football World Cup. In the heat of the moment some speculated whether this national sense of delight could in some way be politically transformative. Only four days later came an answer of sorts: amid yet another political crisis the government launched a probably doomed attempt to impeach the supreme court (CSJN).
