ECUADOR: Indigenous dialogue wrapped up

The 90-day dialogue process between Ecuador’s indigenous movement and the government led by President Guillermo Lasso concluded on 14 October. It was neither a resounding success nor an unmitigated disaster. The government minister, Francisco Jiménez, was keen to focus on the 218 accords that had been struck in the course of the dialogue process as a sign of its success during his remarks at the closing ceremony. These all now need to be implemented, however, and the president of the country’s largest indigenous movement, Confederación Nacional de Organizaciones Indígenas del Ecuador (Conaie), Leonidas Iza, said it would reserve judgement until then. He also stressed that the thorny issue of fuel subsidies had not yet been fully resolved.
