The defence minister, Maya Fernández, was forced to cut short a visit to the US and speed back to Santiago on 22 September to lead a crisis-response effort after a group of hackers broke into the server of the joint command of the armed forces and leaked more than 400,000 emails containing sensitive information to the press. Fernández was part of the delegation accompanying President Gabriel Boric to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
