Remittances surge. On 15 August Honduras’s central bank (BCH) released new figures which show that remittances sent to Honduras in the first seven months of 2022 totalled US$4.91bn, up 19.6% on the same period in 2021. According to the same BCH figures, remittances totalled US$7.4bn in 2021, representing 26.1% of the country’s GDP. The BCH report highlights that, as of July 2022, Honduras was the Central American country to have received the second highest amount of remittances this year after Guatemala, which received US$10.34bn (up 24.3% on the same period in 2021), while El Salvador received US$4.45bn (up 3.8%).
