This week Guatemala’s minister of foreign relations (Minex), Mario Búcaro, began a three-day visit to Taiwan where he pledged to boost ties. His trip drew attention given China’s growing influence in Central America, previously a key bastion of support for Taiwan, with Nicaragua most recently joining the list of countries in the isthmus to have made the switch to Beijing in December 2021. Búcaro’s visit will be welcomed by the US government which is wary of China’s presence in the sub-region, a rare point of agreement amid otherwise strained relations between Washington and the government led by President Alejandro Giammattei over backsliding in democracy and human rights in Guatemala [WR-22-32].
