GUYANA: The divisions persist
The 2020 general election was one of the most bitter in Guyanese history, with David Granger doing everything he could to hold onto power for the mainly Afro-Guyanese supported Partnership for National Unity-Alliance for Change (Apnu-AFC) coalition, of which Granger’s People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) was the dominant component. At stake was the guardianship of Guyana’s newfound oil wealth and the likely benefits that this would bring to whichever party happened to be in power as the oil money began to flow. In the event, it was the mainly East Indian supported People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPPC) under President Irfaan Ali that won the election and is now presiding over the country’s oil boom. Time has done nothing to heal the bitterness and divisions of that contest.
