Bolivia’s former president Jeanine Áñez (2019-2020) was sentenced to 10 years in prison on 11 June, in a verdict that once again opened deep divisions over her self-proclamation as interim president in November 2019. In the eyes of her supporters, Áñez merely fulfilled her constitutional duty in response to alleged electoral fraud in favour of her predecessor, Evo Morales (2006-2019). For her opponents, including the current government led by President Luis Arce, Áñez seized power in a coup with the backing of the armed forces. Those debates will not recede with her sentencing, which was slammed as partisan by the political opposition and also drew criticisms from human rights groups and many in the international community.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1411 words.
