Honduras: On 29 June Honduras’ President Xiomara Castro met with the commander of the US Southern Command (Southcom), General Laura Richardson, in the capital, Tegucigalpa, to discuss regional security and continued cooperation between the US and Honduras. According to a Southcom press release, Richardson and US ambassador to Honduras Laura Dogu met with Castro to discuss security cooperation and joint efforts to combat drug traffickers and transnational criminal organisations. Richardson’s visit to Honduras was her second since becoming Southcom commander in October 2021. The same source notes that Richardson and Dogu also met with a group of senior Honduran leaders, including the president’s private secretary, Héctor Zelaya, Education Minister Daniel Esponda; Health Minister Manuel Matheu; and Vice Minister of Defense, Col. Elías Antonio Melgar. On 30 June Richardson travelled to Joint Task Force-Bravo (JTF-Bravo), a task force which operates out of the Soto Cano Air Base, a Honduran military installation located in the Comayagua department. JTF-Bravo is comprised of more than 500 US military personnel and more than 500 US and Honduran civilians. She met with service members and presided over the task force’s change of command ceremony.
