 *Panama’s agricultural development ministry (Mida) has announced that the food supply in the capital, Panama City, will hold after the arrival of 200 vehicles containing agricultural shipments, despite a two-day strike which began on 26 June by lorry drivers transporting agricultural produce. The strike is in response to rising fuel costs which at the end of last month prompted the government led by President Laurentino Cortizo, to freeze the cost of fuel at US$3.95 per gallon for certain sectors including public transport, school buses and truck drivers transporting agricultural produce. However, the striking truck drivers say all sectors of society should benefit from fixed fuel costs, not just select groups as they will be unable to afford to buy their produce. These demands come as year-on-year inflation in Panama was running at 4.2% in May, up from 3.7% in April and 1.9% in May 2021.
