BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS | No direct rule. The British government decided last week not to impose direct rule on the British Virgin Islands (BVI), after the premier of the overseas territory, Andrew Fahie, was arrested in the US on 28 April, charged with conspiracy to import a controlled substance and money laundering. A Commission of Inquiry (COI) report focused on corruption and abuse of authority in the BVI, which was published a day later on 29 April, had recommended direct rule, denouncing “appalling” failures in the BVI’s governance, “serious impropriety”, and a “high likelihood” that serious corruption had occurred [WR-22-18].
