* Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has met US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry for the second time this month to discuss ongoing efforts to tackle the climate crisis, principally Mexico’s progress towards transitioning to a clean energy economy. Speaking to the media following the meeting, Kerry said Mexico had committed to “a very strong relationship… with the US in order to live up to its responsibilities regarding the climate crisis”. He stated that the US is expecting Mexico to welcome private investment into its energy sector to accelerate the transition to clean energy. Mexico’s Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said that the details of this agreement would be announced at a virtual meeting of the major economies forum on energy and climate (MEF) on 17 June. US ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar, who was also present at the meeting, tweeted his support writing: “Today’s meeting between President López Obrador and Climate Envoy John Kerry brings us a step closer to a green-energy future.” Prior to the meeting, Salazar had stressed that relations between the US and Mexico had not been affected by López Obrador’s absence at the Summit of the Americas, which took place from 6-10 June in Los Angeles. This sentiment was seemingly supported by López Obrador, who tweeted to say Kerry was “respectful, conciliatory, and proactive”.
