Colombia: On 5 May US authorities announced that
Dairo Antonio Úsuga David (‘Otoniel’) was extradited to the US from Colombia. He is due to face charges in the Eastern District of New York of leading a continuing criminal enterprise, the multibillion dollar Clan del Golfo drug trafficking organisation, which emerged from the Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC) paramilitary group, and participating in an international cocaine manufacturing and distribution conspiracy. As alleged in court documents, between June 2003 and October 2021, Otoniel oversaw the export of multi-tonne shipments of cocaine from Colombia to Mexico and Central America for ultimate importation into the US. Additionally, the indictment alleges that Otoniel participated in an international conspiracy to manufacture and distribute cocaine, knowing and intending that the narcotics would be illegally imported into the US. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
