*Mexico’s President
Andrés Manuel López Obrador has revealed that he is seeking to create a lithium association with Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile. His announcement, which was made in his daily press conference, follows
the approval last month by Mexico’s federal senate of his proposal to nationalise the lithium industry. López Obrador confirmed that he had spoken directly with Bolivia’s President
Luis Arce, who in turn had communicated with the governments of Argentina and Chile, to propose
“creating a mutually beneficial association” to work together developing the production of lithium through exploration and new technologies. If the partnership between the four countries goes ahead, Mexico would be partnering with the three countries that top the list of greatest identified lithium resources, according to a January 2022 report by the US Geological Survey (USGS). While Mexico does not currently carry out any commercial lithium production itself, it is believed to have potentially lucrative deposits.
