* Brazil’s mining and energy minister,
Bento Albuquerque, has said that the
planned privatisation auction for the state-owned electricity company Eletrobras will take place by July, after the financial ombudsman’s board (TCU) voted on 20 April to delay the company’s auction by 20 days in order to further study the privatisation plan. Albuquerque said that there was
“a lot of [market] interest” in Eletrobras, and that its privatisation can
“without a doubt” take place by July. Shares in Eletrobras fell by 4.8% on the São Paulo stock exchange following Albuquerque’s comments, but have since rallied. President
Jair Bolsonaro’s administration has claimed that the company’s privatisation would generate some R$67bn (US$14bn) for the federal government.
